Paul Devoto has presented at ETC, and received rave reviews in the conference evaluations, for the last two years. And I found out that he was selected as part of the Apple Distinguished Educators Class of 2009. These were great reasons to attend his session “Integrating Technology into the Math Curriculum” at the CUE Conference.

Paul’s presentation was accompanied by a Keynote presentation, that displayed many of the attributes shared in the book “Presentation Zen.” I’m wondering if that was part of the appeal of the session for the attendees. Instead of trying to copy bullet points of text, the audience enjoyed his selection of images and videos and listened to the stories behind them. It was a very compelling way to share a great deal of information.
The focus of Paul’s session was demonstrating how technology could be used by teachers as a magic wand to help them save time and increase learning. To accomplish that mission, Paul demonstrated how timed warm-ups have become an important part of his daily lessons. Video is an important part of the way that Paul manages his classroom. Paul videotapes samples and instructions for students to follow during timed warm-ups, digital flashcards, and even to ensure smooth procedures during math stations. ????? ???? ???? ? ?????
In addition to providing instruction, Paul emphasized the important role that educators play in motivating students. To meet that goal, Paul showed some examples of inspirational quotations that he uses with his students and discussed how he works on getting the students to integrate the ideas into their lives. Of course, no CUE Conference session would be complete without some resources that can be used in the classroom on Monday. Paul shared his tool for online quizzes and an interesting piece of software called GeoGebra. He also showed some examples of students using Comic Life

A common complaint from the session attendees was that the room was too small (good thing the fire marshall did not stop by to evict the people sitting on the floor). San Juan Unified School District is very fortunate to have educators like Paul Devoto and Joe Wood. I’m looking forward to learning more from them in the future.
