The early morning session on the final day of a conference is tough for both presenter and attendees. However, I’m glad I made the effort and took the time to attend the Comic Life session by Linda Oaks. For starters, Comic Life is available for Windows, Mac, and even the iPhone/iPod touch. In a nutshell, Comic Life allows you to create comics (complete with Wow effects and fun captions) from images. If you use the latest version of the Mac Operating System, Plasq has an expanded version called Magiq that has some very expanded features, such as a green screen effect and fun picture-bending effects.
As the title of the session (and this blog post) suggested, the focus of this session was making teaching fun. It was great to attend a session that wasn’t trying to make a sweeping change in curriculum and technology, but instead was demonstrating a resource that can make learning fun for teachers and students. Some of the features that Linda shared, that were new to me, was the ability to capture images for Comic Life from a webcam, and the “Quick Comic” feature that will automatically place a folder of pictures into a comic strip template. Comic Life can export comics in a variety of formats, such as PDFs, web pages, and even Quicktime movies. Klute download
During the session, Linda also passed around a great book called Comic Life for Educators
. This book showed many examples of common classroom activities that were given an extra sparkle through the use of Comic Life. As examples of teacher handouts, the book contained samples of seating charts, graphic organizers, and newsletters using Comic Life effects. For students, a few examples that caught my eye were poems written and illustrated in Comic Life and a Science Lab write-up that included the Scientific Process complete with Comic Life effects.

An extension to Comic Life that has been formulating in my mind is to create a Comic Life illustration, export it as a Quicktime movie, then add narration in iMovie. Maybe this idea will come to fruition during the upcoming holidays…

Thank you so much for mentioning our book, “Comic Life for Educators” in your blog post. Our thanks to Linda Oaks for using it in her presentation, too.
