Wow! It’s been an amazing night watching the speeches and history-making election results. As part of our process for emphasizing the importance of voting, we sat down with the kids and watched the results on TV. While we were watching, I fired up the Eee PC and asked Robert to record the electoral college results in a Google Docs spreadsheet. These numbers were used by him (and his sister) to color a map of the country. (Sorry, I wish I was able to think up a more creative lesson.) Our final step of this process was to create a graph of the electoral college numbers, as reported or predicted at the time Robert went to bed. As you look at the graph, posted at the bottom of this blog post, you will notice that we could not change the colors in the graph. Ironically, Google Docs selected Red for Obama and Blue for McCain. It appears that the only way we could make the colors more suitable would be to switch the columns for Obama and McCain in the original spreadsheet.

While they were doing this, I snapped a few pictures and used the Eee PC to upload them to Voicethread. A nice feature was the built-in Secure Digital memory card reader. I was able to upload the pictures directly from the card. We continued the process of using the Eee PC to create a Voicethread. It was nice to have the built-in microphone for adding comments. However, I could not get the built-in webcam to record a video comment. The resulting Voicethread is embedded at the top of this blog post.
