This morning I got the pleasure of seeing a 1:1 laptop school in action. On the way to other meetings in Sacramento, I had some time to visit Joe Wood’s classroom at the Jonas Salk High-Tech Academy
The Queen of Spades dvd . It brought back memories of my classroom teaching days to see Joe greeting his students at the door with a handshake and some opening instructions (a technique espoused by the esteemed Harry Wong).
Joe designed the lesson for students to combine the use of traditional learning tools (textbook) with Web 2.0 tools (Flickr). The agenda for the class was displayed using Keynote. When Joe discussed the activities, the students were asked to close their laptops so they would not be distracted(this classroom management technique showed one big advantage of laptops over desktop computers). Joe demonstrated how students would download a Keynote template and use a Flickr Creative Commons search to complete a science vocabulary presentation. In the presentation, students were asked to define scientific terms (using only the textbook or their previous knowledge as sources) and provide examples with Flickr photos. In a fascinating display of classroom management, as the students worked, Joe’s computer displayed Apple Remote Desktop. The display rotated through the screens of six student laptops at a time, so Joe could monitor what the students were doing on their computers.
At the conclusion of the period, the students saved their work, packed up their laptops, and headed off to the next class. The sight of students traveling with laptop bags reminded me of how dependent I am on my computer and how much I travel with it (although I don’t have Spiderman on my laptop bag…
