I just finished facilitating the second day of a MacBook 101 class and was planning to blog about the favorite resource that I shared with the group. My initial thought for a post was to list favorite widgets discovered by the class. However, it appears that I will have to save my post about widgets for another day. I hope that the topic of this post Osmosis Jones move Pandora and PandoraJam are not the rantings of the last person to pay attention to what is happening on the Internet. One of the features of Macs and iTunes that was discussed during the workshop was the availability of radio stations streamed through iTunes. Then Katy, a UCLA student attending the workshop, mentioned the product PandoraJam.
For those of you like me, who have not heard of Pandora, it is a customizable Internet radio. You can create multiple radio stations that will play music based upon your interest in particular artists or songs. As Pandora plays songs, it can tell you why it picked the songs for you (eg. “we’re playing this track because it features classical stylings, a symphony orchestra, tonal harmony, major key tonality and a majestic feeling.”), and gives you the opportunity to give each track a thumbs up or down. Pandora will then use this information to decide which song to play next. The PandoraJam software takes this customized radio station a step further and allows you to download the music to iTunes to be streamed wirelessly over your network or synced to your iPod to become part of your mobile music collection. Amazingly enough, this is legal, and it only costs $15 to purchase the PandoraJam software. After purchasing the software, you are welcome to download as many songs as you want from your customized Internet radio stations. It’s a good thing that external terabyte hard drives are affordable

While this resource probably doesn’t appear to have an immediate use in the classroom, I think it shows how the Internet is again providing the opportunity for people to create their own content. The Hazing ipod American High School ipod Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street film

I appreciate the comments that you have taken the time to add to this blog. It was especially nice to see a tweet from Joe that pointed out David Warlick’s recent post
about unconferences. There does seem to be interest in an unmeeting at the end of April. My thought was to hold the meeting from 4pm-6pm (so that we could include classroom teachers) with the starting theme of “Neat Internet Resources” and see how things progress. Invitations should be going out soon and hopefully you will all have one resource to share (the great news is that Linda is bringing the chocolate)…

I knew about Pandora, but I didn’t know about PandoraJam. Thanks for sharing! Looking forward to the chocolate.
Can’t wait to see the resources that people share. Burt could be the new trendsetter in Region 6. I look forward to the new platform to share.
